The Society is saddened to hear of the death, on 28 July 2025, of Edwin Bock at the great age of 103.
Ed was one of the Society's very first members, and a staunch supporter, especially of events in New York.
Having served in the US Infantry WW2 he was subsequently a civilian research director in the American administration of Japan where he played a small part in ensuring the country's liberalisation. He then studied and taught at the London School of Economics, before returning to New York where he went on to become Professor of Public Administration at Syracuse University.
Ed had wide ranging interests across the arts, including, of course, literature and Anthony Powell who was one of his heroes. Indeed those who were privileged to see them will long remember the mini-plays and entertainments he devised for the Society. It was Ed's great age which prompted the introduction of the Society's policy of granting honorary life membership to members who reach the age of 90.
Ed was a true gentleman who will be remembered with great affection by all who knew him.
The Society sends it's condolences to all of Ed's extended family and friends.
