Anthony Powell's first published work was The Barnard Letters: a series of
family letters which he edited for his employer, the publishers Duckworth.
The Barnard Letters 1778-1824 (Duckworth; 1928) – Introduction to follow
When possible during WW2 Powell researched the life of 17th-century antiquarian John Aubrey.
This resulted, following the war, to a biography and an edition of Aubrey's "Brief Lives".
Here Mike Jay introduces us to both these works.
