Anthony Powell's Journalism, Volume 6

The Lost Heinemann Files and "Christmas with Kafka"

The Society announces the publication of the sixth, and probably last, volume of Powell's selected journalism: The Lost Heinemann Files and "Christmas with Kafka", edited by Robin Bynoe.

Anthony Powell had grand plans for the publication of his reviews in book form. Miscellaneous Verdicts and Under Review (volumes 1 and 2) were but the start. He sent a third volume, more extensive in scope, to Heinemann, his regular publishers. They lost it. Then they said that they would not publish it anyway. Time passed and he died. The original text was reassembled by his family and published as Some Poets, Artists & "A Reference for Mellors" (volume 3).

When we started to publish Powell's journalism, we looked farther afield, but for this volume (volume 6) we return to Some Poets – because after many years Heinemann discovered the lost files and they included some fifty pieces not included in Volume 3. So here they are.

This is Powell at his most erudite and witty. We have added some pieces from Powell's "probables" pile, together with one of his first attempts at the controversial art of fan fiction.

The Lost Heinemann Files and "Christmas with Kafka" is now available from the Society's online shop.

We also have a small number of the bumper Newsletter issue 100, for anyone who wants a printed copy.
