Hilary Spurling, CBE FRSL, was a long-time friend of Anthony Powell and Lady Violet. As well as being Powell's chosen biographer, she wrote the remarkable, and quite indispensable, Invitation to the Dance: A Guide to Anthony Powell's 'A Dance to the Music of Time'. She has also written, amongst many other works, acclaimed biographies of Ivy Compton-Burnett, Paul Scott, and Henri Matisse – the latter receiving the Whitbread Book of the Year Award.
